About ECO Hikers
ECO Hikers is a grassroots initiative founded by Jordanians to reduce waste and littering through hiking events around the country. Our campaign was born out of the desire for better treatment of the environment around Jordan. Anyone who has traveled or hiked around Jordan has seen the paradox firsthand of the natural splendor of this country alongside trash that lines some of the most beautiful wadis.
We grew tired of hiking and seeing the trash others had left, so, in February 2018 we began with a simple hiking event near Salt that we publicized on Facebook. The response was overwhelming, and we had to schedule a second event the following week to accommodate all the interested volunteers.
Since then, we have organized more than 50 hikes to places such as King Talal Dam, Jalaad Forest, Wadi Shkaifat, Wadi Aya, Wadi Himara and Dibeen Forest, and many other beautiful locations, each time bringing from 30 up to 110 participants and collecting on average 300 bags of trash, equivalent to more than 100 tons of trash.
On an international level, ECO Hikers has been featured by many news organizations including the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, the Jordan Times, Jordanian TV and, Al-Mamlaka TV and Al-Araby to raise awareness about our initiative and the efforts of our volunteers here in Jordan. Our sponsors have included the French and Canadian embassies, Oxfam, UNICEF, UN Volunteers and Careem.
